Dear all,
I'm writing to you to discuss BILL 140 DRAFT 2. Polystyrene should 100%be phased out from take out
services and for general use in our everyday society. There is no need to continue to rely on a chemical that both
the EPA and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have identified as a possible human carcinogen
and causes so much environmental damage.
China banned expanded polystyrene takeout/takeaway containers and tableware around 1999. India and Taiwan
also banned polystyrene foam food service ware prior to 2007. As of 2006, about one hundred localities in the
United States including Portland, Oregon and San Francisco currently have some sort of ban on polystyrene
foam in restaurants. We owe it to our neighbors and our keiki to stop being so dependent on a material that
offers little to no benefit to our habits, especially when it is already so economical to switch to something that is
less detrimental in its effects. We come from a state that should be at the forefront of such issues. Please don't
render us to be the population or group that is stuck dragging their feet when everyone else is heading towards a
better future.
