As a citizen of the County of Hawaii, I firmly support the EPS ban.
I exercise at the beach nearly every day, and it amazes me to see the number of single-use waste
containers used in a single day. I often find them littering the roads on the way to the beach, and I find
them at the shore.
What surprises me is the fact that Hawaii County hasn't already dealt with this issue. In many other
places, you can't find these types of containers.
I am an experienced environmental scientist, who has worked on some waste management
projects. I know the burden of using these types of containers. It leaves a huge toll on society and the
environment in general, even if they do make it to the landfill. For example, in desperation, the state
of Florida planned on building a landfill that would reach 200 feet tall and take up acres near the
coast. You can see others like if for miles: Literally mountains of trash.
I believe we need to be good stewards of our island, and take whatever measures are necessary
to curb unnecessary waste.
Trust me, the small businesses that use these containers in other places quickly and nearly
seamlessly switched to biodegradable containers without incident. The businesses I know who made
the switch did it voluntarily, because they wanted to be part of the solution. Let's join the cause and
leave a lasting legacy that doesn't include mountains of trash or damaged ecosystems and creatures.
