To Whom It May Concern:
Please strongly be advised that conservation is for future generations that cannot yet speak for themselves. It
is up to us living in the present to preserve what we can for those who will live on when we pass on. It is for
the love of humanity and this Earth that I write this testimony.
I cannot speak for all humanity, but it is my firm belief that people of the future would benefit from the
preservation of our planet and its species and resources in its most diverse and healthy state. Styrofoam is
number 6 plastic that causes lasting (possibly permanent) harm to our planet and its species. It is created to
be used for just a few minutes but its mass manufacture and use poses many problems for us living in the
present and will continue to pose problems for those in the future. Adding to landfills, eyesores as litter,
choking marine animals, and releasing toxins as it breaks down-into smaller pieces or is burned, the use of
styrofoam makes little sense when you factor in all of its negative impacts in the present time and its
compounding effects in future generations.
On a personal note, I actually eat out less because I try to avoid the use of styrofoam. The economy would
benefit in a multitude of ways with the styrofoam ban. First off,the tourism industry would benefit from
having a less polluted environment. Secondly, more people who are environmentally conscious would eat out
more if food vendors used more environmentally friendly take out containers. Lastly, we can reduce the
amount of landfill space all of us taxpayers contribute to if we were to switch to eco-friendly containers that
decompose naturally and do not contain toxins when they break down.
If ever you worry about not having public support to pass this bill please contact me. I can't think of anyone
who wants Hawaii to be more polluted or congested by styrofoam if given the choice!
