Re: RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE EXEMPTION OF CERTAIN CODE REQUIREMENTS, PURSUANT TO SECTION 20111-38 AND SECTION 46-15 OF THE HRS,FOR HUALALAI HEALTH, LLC, KONA,HAWAI'I, COVERED BY TAX MAP KEY(3) 7-5-010:061 Aloha Chair Maile Davis, Vice-Chair Karen Eoff and committee members, I offer strong support for the resolution before you which would provide exemptions specifically for The Hualalai Kai Senior Housing Project. I believe we are all aware of the critical need for access to better healthcare in our community. According to the State Plan, Hawaii Island had the highest growth rate of adults sixty years and above during the period of 1989 to 2000, and continues to grow. This is indicative of the amount of services that are needed for this sector of our population here in our own community. West Hawaii faces a shortage of long-term and skilled nursing beds as well as acute care beds. The lack of these services has created financial burden on the hospitals as the patients are kept in the hospital for longer than necessary until they can be placed at a facility that provides the necessary care for them. The seniors who are no longer able to care for themselves in their own homes need resources and alternative solutions available to provide a continuum of care community, something that will be made available to x them at the Hualalai Kai Senior Housing Project. °:, c 0 P As a legislator and a physician, I have seen the disparities that our people are facing in Z our community as far as access to better healthcare. Long-term care is a critical gap in 'd our health care delivery system and there are costs across the state and county because w V do not have sufficient services. We need private investors in order to have these resource N . available in these areas that we are lacking in. •I implore you to grant exemption for this much needed project and allow our community °' access to better healthcare.
