Every year,across the country, Martin Luther King,Jr.'s birthday is celebrated as a national holiday. This
holiday is set aside for each of us to think about his continuing legacy of civil rights and community
action. This day is also a day of service where communities come together and help to make the places
where they live better for all.
Schools are one of the centers of most communities and in our schools is reflected the hopes and
dreams of all those who are affiliated in some way,whether that be as a student, a teacher, or a parent.
In giving to our school, my hope is that we will begin to build more pride in ourselves and our island.
Pahoa High wishes to continue to support Dr. King's goals and to do this we will have a campus
beautification day on Monday,January 18, 2016. On this day,we will pitch in to make our school a little
nicer for the students and community. Our primary focus will be repainting bannisters, railings,strips,
and benches across campus. Also,through the hard work of Sheryl Ogawa, a teacher at Pahoa High and
Intermediate School,we will be planting ti trees at various spots around campus. It is my hope that the
students, parents, and staff will see their school as a place of safety, a place where we come together,
and above all, a place where we focus on the education of ourselves and of our children.
We hope that this will be the first year for this event and that each year we will add to our campus so
that we can all have pride in our school.
