REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY <br /> AND MASS TRANSIT <br /> DATE: August 2, 2016 Re: Comm.No. 946 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 1:06 p.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit,to which was referred Comm.No. 946,reports as follows: <br /> Communication No. 946,transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi, dated July 14, 2016, requests review and <br /> favorable recommendation of the nomination of Mr. Wayne DeLuz of Council District 4 to the County of Hawai`i <br /> Police Commission. <br /> After the close of public testimony, Deputy County Clerk, Jon Henricks, read Comm.No. 946 into the record, <br /> preceding a motion made by Ms. Poindexter and seconded by Ms. David to approve the nomination. Executive <br /> Assistant to Mayor Kenoi,Ms. Charmaine Shigemura, introduced and provided background information on <br /> Mr. Wayne DeLuz, expressed the Mayor's support,and requested Council's favorable action of this appointment. <br /> Mr. Wayne DeLuz is a 50-year old resident of Hawaii. He is the owner of Big Island Motors dba Hilo-Kona <br /> Mazda Subaru Hyundai. Mr. DeLuz is a former Hawai`i Island United Way board member and past president of <br /> KIAA. He is a member of the Hawaii Auto Dealers Association. He states that he is not affiliated with any <br /> political party. If confirmed, Mr. DeLuz will serve a vacant term to end on December 31, 2019. <br /> Mr. DeLuz appeared in front of Your Committee in the Hilo Council Chambers, with an opening statement <br /> expressing gratitude for his nomination and honor to serve on the Police Commission. Mr. DeLuz states he now <br /> has more time to commit to serve officers in the Police Department and the citizens of Hawai`i. <br /> During discussion, Mr. Onishi supported the nomination and commended Mr. DeLuz for volunteering with his <br /> busy schedule. The remaining Committee Members shared the same sentiment.
