I strongly support a ban on the use of Styrofoam for food containers as of July 2018 and am writing to ask you to vote against Resolution 565,D2 UNLESS Amendment, Comm. 944.14 is approved. Support for efforts to curb the use of polystyrene foam/Styrofoam exists island wide and includes many food service vendors. Others would support a ban on polystyrene foam food containers but are unaware of the availability of alternative eco- friendly products. Therefore, we need a stakeholders task force to identify specific educational steps the Department of Environmental Management and the Environmental Management Commission should undertake in partnership with interested nonprofit organizations and vendors to smoothly and successfully implement an effective ban on the sale and provision of polystyrene foam food containers and service ware. A stakeholders task force is also needed to identify solutions addressing recyclability and environmental sustainability concerns related to increasing the use of reusable, returnable, and compostable products in place of non- reusable, non- returnable, or non-compostable products. The elimination of non- recyclable, non- reusable, and non- compostable products is undoubtedly in the public interest and so 1 request that you vote for Amendment, Comm. 944.14 to ensure that all stakeholders are represented so that Resolution 565 will result in it's intended outcome.
