Subject: WE SUPPORT Reso 565-16 Let's find a solution & protect the County Budget, our
grandchildren, the aina &fish.
Aloha Honorable County of Hawaii Leaders; Members of Our County Council,
Instead of raising taxes to deal with our landfill; the immense & expensive waste
production on our Island, why can't we implement measures to decrease waste in the
landfill?
We evolved in caring for the aina (& our County coffers) w/the plastic bag initiative.
Compare the cornpostable option here with the comparable below and look at the
difference in price: http://www.genpak.com/shop/product-
info/HF203 $61.12/200 ct.
The Styrofoam here: http://www.genpak.com/shop/products/hinged/ Same size
$26.50 to $31.00/200 ct. depending on thickness &lid locking design
The consumer is prepared for a small extra charge for plastic bags...let's establish a
Hawaii Island Packaging Sustainability Initiative (HIPSI) Stakeholders Task Force
and find the concerns & solutions!
Styrofoam is created from benzene that was really limited by regulation from close-
contact human use IN THE 1930'S. Styrofoam (polystyrene) never deteriorates,
never goes back to an organic compound that exists harmoniously with the rest of
the Ao; eco-system. It simply breakdowns down to smaller pieces, ends up in the
ocean where it is ingested by millions of smaller fish (their junk food) & contributes
to smog and global warming. SINCE it is not biodegradable, it contributes immensely to
landfill pileup.
Kokua the County Budget, the Aina & Keep our grandchildren from looking up at us
at our BBQ years from now & ask, "Kupuna why does this fish have beads inside?"
