RESOLUTION NO. 643 16
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING MAYOR WILLIAM P. KENOI AND FIRE CHIEF
DARREN J. ROSARIO RENAME THE MAKALEI FIRE STATION TO THE
"MAKALEI FIRE STATION AND DANIEL R. SAYRE WEST HAWAII FIRE
TRAINING CENTER."
WHEREAS, in 1997, 25-year-old Daniel Sayre tragically lost his life while hiking to the
back of Pololu Valley. Three firefighters selflessly and courageously risked their lives to rescue
Daniel from the 500-foot valley floor. Frank Sayre and Laura Mallery-Sayre created a memorial
fund honoring the Hawai`i Fire Department to show their gratitude. The Daniel R. Sayre
Memorial Foundation has raised over $1,000,000, which was exclusively used to purchase
rescue equipment and provide lifesaving training for the Hawai`i Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, the Hawai`i Fire Department would like to honor, recognize, and
acknowledge Daniel R. Sayre and the Sayre Family for their tireless dedication to honoring the
heroes of the Hawai`i Fire Department year after year at the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial
Foundation Awards Dinners. Further, the donations from the fund provide a lifeline to the
Hawai`i Fire Department, which enables the Department to save more lives; and
WHEREAS, the Makalei Fire Station, built by the County of Hawai`i, is 11,000 square
feet and among its many features is a hose tower which doubles as a training facility for
simulating cliff rescues, such as rappelling down the side of a building or cliff, and building
fires. The station also has a modern classroom for future firefighters to learn the art of fire
science and should be renamed the "Makalei Fire Station and Daniel R. Sayre West Hawai`i
Training Center"; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that in
recognition of the Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Funds generous donations and the Sayre Family's
tireless dedication to the I lawaii Fire Department, it hereby requests that the Makalei Fire
Station he renamed the "Makalei Fire Station and Daniel R. Sayre West Hawaii Training
Center."
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Honorable Mayor William P. Kenoi, Fire Chief Darren J. Rosario, and "Ihc
Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Fund.
