Dear Chairman Arakaki and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to nominate Jo-Anna K. Herkes of Council District 6, to the
Hawaii County Police Commission, to replace Charles Sakamoto of Council
District 6, whose term expired on December 31, 1997.
Mrs. Herkes is a 19-year resident of Hawaii and since 1996 has been employed
by House of Representatives, State of Hawaii. Prior to that she was employed
(part-time) by Current Events and was the Director of fundraising at Washington
Middle School in Salinas, California, 1992-1993. She states that she is a
member of the Democratic Party.
If approved, Mrs. Herkes will serve a term to end on December 31, 2002. Should
the Council need further information regarding this nomination, you may call em
at your convenience.

Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 238, reports as follows:
Communication No. 238, transmitted by Mayor Stephen K. Yamashim, dated Apri18, 1999,
nominates Mrs. Jo-Anna K. Herkes of Council District 6 to the Hawaii County Police
Commission.
A 19-year resident of Hawaii, Mrs. Herkes has been employed by the House of Representatives
since 1996. Prior to that she was employed by Current Events and was the Director of
Fundraising at Washington Middle School in Salinas, California. A member of the Democratic
Party, she will serve a term to end December 31, 2002.
Pursuant to Section 7-2.2, Hawaii County Charter, the Police Commission shall consist of seven
members...appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the council in the manner prescribed in
Section 13-4.
Your Committee on Finance recommends the confirmation of Mrs. Jo-Anna K. Herkes to the
Hawaii County Police Commission.
