~-1~e regret that eve were unable to attend your important hearing at the Kona Surf last night.
~~~e are dismayed at the pros,.~ect of so larg~.(~i~p~portionate) a tax increase on Sic-l~r,t;al
property here in West Hawaii. bllithout going into all of the details which have already been
covered, suffice it to say that we own a residential lot in Coastview subdivision. You know that
subdivision: the one which is, after being built out with double-zoned housing, now facing a
huge monthly assessment to get water to it's homes. And we're facing a tax increase? ~1~hat for? If
that increase reflected the services which we would glean, we would be much more inclined to
favor them (though they are still far too extreme). As it turns out, we are unable to build on our
lot, but find that ti~~e also cannot sell it without a huge loss due to this unfortunate and ridiculous
situation allowed by our county. Water does go to this lot, but it is considered a liability rather
than an asset.
Additionally, as construction continues in the Kalaoa area, the lack of county help goes hand-in-
hand with decimation of our lifestyle. Developers like V~~hite Hat are afforded a ream of
variances in their original agreements (no under •ound utilities, no green spaces, no sidewalks,
one road out for hundreds of houses, etc. These liabilities will later be a problem and cost for
whom? Certainly not ±he developer and, looking at the situation in Coastvie~v, not the County.
The residents of all of these areas will pay zxorbitant tax rates, not to mention insurance, and will
be left high and dry when, say a fire truck is needed at the bottom of the ne~v one-~vay-in, one-
way-out streets which have been allowed by our "planners."
Please g o back to the drawing board. Don't cut services to the tiveak, the poor, the infirm. But do
not expect residents to sit idly by while the mayor begs salary increases for his appointed
government friends.
