568-16, Relating to Discrimination Against Women
Dear Chair Kanuha and Members of the Hawaii County Council,
Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii ("PPVNH") writes in support of Res. 568-16,which
seeks to adopt and implement on a local level the principles of the United Nations Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women ("CEDAW").
PPVNH promotes and protects reproductive health,rights and justice by advocating for public policies that
guarantee the right to choice and full and nondiscriminatory access to reproductive health care. PPVNH
supports CEDAW because it will help to promote reproductive justice by combating gender based discrimi-
nation and ensuring equality for women and girls in the Hawaii County workforce, services,programming
and policies. In particular, CEDAW will address discrimination against women and girls in areas including
economic development,violence against women and girls and health care.
Hawaii County's adoption of CEDAW will serve as an example of Hawaii's high standards for the health
and well-being of women and girls at a time when serious assaults against reproductive health and justice
are occurring across the nation. Most importantly,it will serve to provide positive, genuine,lasting change in
the every day lives of Hawaii's women and girls.
