Subject: Testimony in strong support for Res. 568-16
Dear Members of the Hawaii County Council,
I am writing in strong support of the passage of Resolution 568-16 (Hawai`i County implementation of the
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women). Honolulu City Council has
already passed Bill 65,which Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed on November 23, 2015. We are eager for Hawai`i
County to join us in supporting our women in the State of Hawai`i.
The resolution will help guide Hawai`i in assisting women to achieve economic, social and cultural equality
within our society as well as provide for a review of successes and opportunities to improve. It is unfortunate
that the US is one of only 7 countries in the world who did not ratify the CEDAW in 1979 at the United Nations
General Assembly, but we can choose to make a difference by joining many other US cities who have passed
similar resolutions and bills.
I strongly urge you all to pass Resolution 568-16 in support of human rights for our women,which will improve
the overall health of Hawai`i.
