Aloha,
I am writing in support of Ms. Wille's bill. This is a case of SENSE versus CENTS.
I am neither a tree-hugger, nor someone naive who believes everything they hear or read, but
someone who has seen what damages pesticide do to humans, wildlife and the
environment.,Alternately I know there are choices, such as this Bill suggests, that can improve life for
all. As a 16-year Hawaii resident and ardent voter, I know that pesticides such as "Roundup" are
locally called "poison' for a reason. They kill, harm, maim and destroy, none of which promote life.
My parents were both of farming families with extensive acreages and multiple crops, so I know
firsthand that cover crops, flame treating, salt and least-toxic chemicals like citrus based herbicides or
even vinegar, are more costly up-front and require more frequent diligent treatment/applications but
the bottom line is that they work and they are safer. Plainly put, if we continue to treat our earth as a
dumping ground or litterbox, someday, just like what already is happening with water, no can, no can.
Then what? What condition have we left our nests for our children and their children?
By the way, California has just begun enforcing restrictions on pesticide-spraying near schools, while
I have seen spraying on Puna school grounds occurring during the school day while classes are in
session. Please wake up, Hawaii. This is not Okay. May Hawaii County become a state leader in
enacting environmentally-forward legislation.
Thanks for your time in hearing my view. In short, this Bill is a no-brainer- please vote Yes to support,
and urge your colleagues to do the same.
