Dear Council Members: I live on Maile Street in Leilani Estates. I am the Neighborhood watch block captain and have
been asked by my neighbors to appeal to you to pass the resolution 688-16 and/or Bill 234(draft 2)which will allow us
to reclaim the street name that has been in place for over 40 years. Using the name "Ma'ili"Street is now and will be in
the future cause for great confusion. This confusion involves for service providers, anyone looking for our homes, and
especially our financial, legal and professional accounts who are very very picky about address changes,assuming fraud
might be at play. Lost checks, statements, baggage,service providers are in.our future if we are forced to deal with the
new name.
We understand the reason why the County's code(written in 1984) restricts the use of duplication in naming new
streets. It makes it hard to have too many"Leilani" streets,for instance. However all other duplicate names for streets
were grandfathered in in 1984. Since our street has been known as "Maile Street for 40 years, it is unfair to leave us out
of the process. The code does allow for exceptions to the requirement"to accommodate ....existing conditions" We
think this applies to us. It was a rare mistake made long ago, and we should not have to pay for this mistake.
People calling in with emergencies are going to use their old name, "Maile". Those who remember that the name is now
different are going to pronounce "Ma'ili"the same. They will say"MY-lee". Another level of confusion is what
emergency services DON'T WANT.
