(00-(b Murashige, Laura Coum' 1032 From: James Haefner <jhaefner@hawaii.rr.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 15, 2016 10:19 AM To: Council Testimony Subject: Support for Resolution 688 Dear Council Members: I live at 13-3521 Maile/Mall'St. in Leilani Estates. I support Resolution 688 to request that the Director of Planning change the name of our street from the original "Ma'ili"to the historically used "Maile". My reasons are these: 1. The intent of the original ordinance (Chap 14,Art 14, Div 3,Sec 14-86) is valid. Repetition of street names can be a problem for emergency responders. 2. Wisely, the ordinance provides for special cases to be exempted. Resolution 688 correctly employs this provision to request the County change the name to "Maile." This is a win-win solution to the problem: future street names will avoid duplication and the long historical use of"Maile" will be preserved. 3. Passing Resolution 688 will not create a "slippery slope" in which residents of many other streets will request the same consideration. The situation in Leilani is rare. The County has failed to enforce the original name for many decades in many official documents generated by the Planning office, the permitting department, and the Department of Transportation. By so doing, it has misled the residents into believing the street is called "Maile". The County Planning Office must accept responsibility for their error. However, the Leilani situation is highly unusual: an original name conflicting with a name of long historical use. As a result, there will be few future requests to circumvent the intent of the ordinance. Please pass Resolution 688. James W. Haefner 13-3521 Maile St. ,-. Pahoa, HI 96778 E.. .+.. , ,. Comm.
