Dear Council Chair Arakaki:
Subject: GTE HAWAIIAN TEL INTRODUCES HAWAII'S FIRST SMARTPARK IN KEEAU
The purpose of this letter is to provide you with information regarding a new economic
development opportunity on the Big Island. GTE Hawaiian Tel has partnered with
W.H. Shipman on the Big Island to create Hawaii's first GTE SmartPark. The SmartPark,
located at the Shipman Business Park in Keeau, offers tenants a combination of low-cost
location and leading-edge telecommunications technology.
GTE Hawaiian Tel has installed fiber optic communication lines into the SmartPark and
serves the tenants with state-of-the-art digital switching technology. Telecommunications
services available at the park include wireline and wireless services, long distance
solutions, Internet access and more. Tenants can choose the level of service that fits
their business today and quickly upgrade to more sophisticated levels of service as their
requirements change. Among the current tenants are HPM Building Supply, Willocks
Construction Corp., Roberts Tours Inc., Anheuser-Busch, United States Cellular and
Sure Save Supermarkets.
Shipman Business Park's 488 acres make it the third-largest business park in the state,
only seven miles from Hilo Airport and eight miles from Hilo Harbor. It is GTE Hawaiian
Tel's hope that the telecommunications capabilities of the Shipman Business Park will
enhance the economic development opportunities on the Big Island.
Please feel free to call Paris Chai of GTE at 546-3868 if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
2
