Aloha e Council Members,
I would just like to start off by saying mahalo for hearing Bill 253 to consider renaming the
soccer fields at Herbert Shipman Park in Kea'au to the "Buddy Perry Soccer Field". I am a
current Na Hoa 0 Puna Soccer player and I am proud to have known Coach Buddy since 2013.
He was such an inspiration to not just me but to many people. He believed that determination
leads to success. He always used to say don't give up to us and that helped us believe in
ourselves. He created 7 rules that I believe to be true and still try to follow. One of the rules say
that when you get fouled or a bad call, just look at your coach and smile. I believe that rule
taught us to rise above and be the better player. He taught me that we were more than just a
team. Another rule was that whenever we saw our Na Hoa 0 Puna member outside of soccer we
would need to Aloha them and shake their hand. Coach Buddy was what a true role model
should be. A park named after him would remind everyone to be just as hard working and
dedicated as Coach Buddy. Once again thank you for considering renaming the park to honor
someone who has had a great impact on my life.
