Honorable Chair Dru Kanuha & County Council Committee Members
Government Relations & Economic Development Committee, County of Hawaii
Office of the County Clerk, 25 Aupuni St.
Hilo, Hawaii 96727
Honorable Chair Dru Kanuha & Committee Members:
Greetings, Chairman Kanuha and Committee members. Thank you very much for the
opportunity to make this presentation on behalf of Joseph Kalani Kamelamela to head
the Office of the Corporation Counsel of the County of Hawaii.
I am Romel Dela Cruz, a resident of Honokaa, Hawaii, a retired State hospital
administrator, and a long time acquaintance and friend of the nominee.
Our County government and the citizens of the Big Island deserve the most qualified
and ethical individual to protect and defend our legal interest and this Committee by its
review and consent powers has the obligation to find and appoint that individual.
If this committee is looking for someone with actual hands on experience and
knowledge about the operations and structure of the Office, it needs not look beyond
Joseph Kalani Kamelamela. For the last forty years (40) he has provided quality legal
services as a law clerk for the University of Hawaii, the Third Circuit Court, the County
of Hawaii Office of the Prosecuting Attorney; and most recently as a senior staff
member of the Office of the Corporation Counsel for over twenty five (25) years.
If this committee is looking for someone with the specific skills and high ethical
standards and conduct for the job; Joe has been involved in multiple high profile as well
as simple cases of the Office and in each case he has defended the interest of the
County with fairness and dignity befitting his legal training and personal philosophy of
integrity and hard work.
He has been and will continue to be a dedicated public servant committed to serve the
best interest of our County government and the residents of the island of Hawaii and
our State.Your approval of the appointment of Joseph Kalani Kamelamela to head the
Office of the Corporation of Hawaii County is the correct decision. Mahalo!
Sincerely,
Romel Dela Cruz
