RESOLUTION NO. 48 17
A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO APPROPRIATE
FUNDS TO PURCHASE AN ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT AMBULANCE AND
EQUIPMENT, AND TO EMPLOY STATE -CERTIFIED EMERGENCY MEDICAL
SERVICE PERSONNEL FOR THE MAKALEI FIRE STATION AND DANIEL R. SAYRE
WEST HAWAII FIRE TRAINING CENTER.
WHEREAS, the Makalei Fire Station and Daniel R. Sayre West Hawaii Fire Training
Center (Makalei Fire Station) in North Kona has been operating since 2012 serving residents and
visitors of the growing North Kona area; and
WHEREAS, the Makalei Fire Station is not equipped or staffed with an advanced life
support ambulance; and
WHEREAS, an advanced life support ambulance with personnel dispatched from
Makalei will reduce the probability of death and disability, by increasing the timely response and
ability to render effective aid to 911 calls, both of which are of paramount importance to
successful outcomes from life-threatening incidents and sickness; and
WHEREAS, the general and aging population in the North Kona area has increased
quickly and significantly creating a greater need for services, which is compounded by broad
geographical transportation challenges as well as a severe lack of emergency medical service
resources; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
Hawaii State Legislature is strongly urged to appropriate funds to purchase an advanced life
support ambulance and equipment, and to employ state -certified emergency medical service
personnel for the Makalei Fire Station and Daniel R. Sayre West Hawaii Fire Training Center,
for the fiscal year 2017-2018.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Governor of the State of Hawaii is urged to
release funds to purchase an advanced life support ambulance and equipment, and to employ
state -certified emergency medical service personnel for the Makalei Fire Station and Daniel R.
Sayre West Hawaii Fire Training Center, for the fiscal year 2017-2018.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Honorable Governor David Y. Ige; the Honorable Representative Cindy Evans;
the Honorable Representative Nicole Lowen; the Honorable Representative Sylvia Luke, Chair
of the Committee on Finance; the Honorable Representative Ty J. K. Cullen, Vice Chair of the
Committee on Finance; the Honorable Representative Della Au Belatti, Chair of the Committee
on Health; the Honorable Representative Bertrand Kobayashi, Vice Chair of the Committee on
Health; the Honorable Representative Ryan I. Yamane, Chair of the Committee on Water and
Land; the Honorable Representative Sam Satoru Kong, Vice Chair of the Committee on Water
and Land; Chief Darren Rosario, Hawai`i Fire Department; and the Honorable Hawai`i County
Mayor, Harry Kim.
