Comm. 1413: ORDINANCE REQUIRING HANDICAPPED -ACCESSIBLE RESTROOMS
(Bill 1038) From Deputy Corporation Counsel Christopher J. Yuen
dated June 28, 1983, responding to questions
regarding proposed Ordinance Bill 1038 that would
require existing shopping centers of 50,000 square
feet or more to provide handicapped -accessible
restrooms; (1) whether there are precedents for this
kind of retroactive building requirement; and (2)
whether the government must assist landowners in
making these changes.
Suggests that the sentence in the bill reading "All
doorways leading to such toilet facilities shall have
not less than a 32 -inch door" be changed to "All
doorways leading to such toilet facilities have a
minimum clear opening of 32 inches."
recommends Council approve and adopt Bill 1038 on first reading.
