It was with interest and concern that we followed the trial as it unfolded. We urge the members of the Hawaii County Council to appeal the recent verdict. It appears that the defense was not given the opportunity to pursue its case, which resulted in an unfair trial. In addition, the monetary awards to the plaintiffs is excessive and unjustified. Chief Wayne CarvaWo has served this community honorably for many years and has upheld the laws which govern us all. Through his leadership, the public and the Police Department have developed an improved relationship resulting in safer communities and more effective responsiveness to the needs of the citizens of Hawaii. It would be a travesty of justice to allow this decision to stand. Sincerely, Karen M. gami ~ Dr. Edward Herlicska Comm. No. 2'72' 't7~5 File No. ~ , Ref. To: ~ ~ilN C/~- Ref. Date JAN 0 4 2000
