HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP PEDLC 081 07/06/1972 1969-1972 • PLANNING, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE REPORT NO 81 Councilmen County of Hawaii Hilo, Hawaii The following are the recommendations of the Planning, Economic Development and Legislative Committee which were considered at its meeting of July 6, 1972: C OMMUN ICAT IONS No . 1665.8: PROBLEM OF OHM DECLINE From Sunao Kido , Chairman, Dept. of Land & Natural Resources, dated June 16, 1972, assuring the Council that their department is concerned about the ohia decline problem and taking positive actions to ascertain: (a) the present location, extent and rate of spread of tree death and decline and determine its subsequent effects on the composition of the forest ; (b) the nature and causes of the decline and death of ohia-koa trees and identify the factors contributing to the apparent recent acceleration of this decline; and (c) the development, if feasible, of control measures which will arrest or retard the decline of this forest. Hopes that the concerted effort by the various scientists, as listed, will ascertain the causes of the death of ohia-koa trees so feasible control measures can be developed and the Hilo watershed properly restored.
