HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP RTC 076 09/22/1976 1972-1976 • • RECREATION AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE Report No, 76 Hawaii County Council Hilo , Hawaii The following are the recommendations of the Recreation and Transportation Committee which were considered at its meeting of September 22, 1976 : COMMUNICATIONS No. 1875 : USE OF FORMER SEVEN SEAS RESTAURANT FOR BOXING PROGRAM From President John Miyasato, Big Island Amateur Boxing Association dated May 14, 1976 requesting the use of the former Seven Seas Restaurant as training headquarters for amateur boxing boys as the old headquarters at Waiakea Recreation is inadequate and not able to accommodate the increasing participation. 1875.1: From Milton T. Hakoda, Parks and Recreation Director dated September 1, 1976, informing that interim use of the former Seven Seas Restaurant building should be allowed. They have informed the President of the Association that the facility is available for their training sessions. Receive and file. �No. 1876. 4: HONOKAA RODEO ARENA From Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi dated September 10, 1976 informing that the Department of Public Works has been requested to proceed with ,the acquisition of the subject site. Receive and file. "N o. 1948: WAIMEA PARK (LINDSEY PARK) IMPROVEMENTS From Councilman William S. Kawahara dated July 22, 1976 requesting the Council to take immediate steps to improve the Waimea Park facilities. '1948x1 : From Milton T. Hakoda, Parks and Recreation Director dated September 3, 1976, informing that the proposed improvements at Waimea Park, including the construction of a community center, outdoor basketball court, a parking area and a concession building, are presently being designed. The construction of all current projects for Waimea Park will depend on the availability of funds. The total estimated cost for the entire project is $500 ,000 , a sum of $250 ,000 is available. • Report No. 76 Receive and file. File No. -re_, M. M. B. Kawahara dated July 22, 1976 informing that there is an urgent need for improvements . at the heavily used White Sands or "Magic Sands" Beach Park in Kona and recommends that monies set aside for acquisition of the 9-acre parcel at Maniniowale be transferred for expansion of Magic Sands Park. No. 19. 72 : . ' ZOO-WEST HAWAII From Councilman William' Kawahara dated August 12, 1976, regarding a zoo for West Hawaii.", 1972.1 : From Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi., dated September 8, 1976 informing that a zoo .complex in West Hawaii cannot be -undertaken 'at this time until the County is fiscally capable of doing so; assures that as soon as they feel that a zoo operation can be developed in West Hawaii; they shall initiate it.' Receive and file. !No. 2032: IMPROVEMENT OF PARKING AREAS AT COUNTY PARKS (dec. 1/RTC-74) From Mayor M atayoshi .dated September 10 , 1976 informing that the Department of Parks and Recreation has. requested 1 the Department of Public- Worksato develop plans for the ' construction • of a paved parking lot at Leleiwi Beach Park. .The estimated cost 'for using' the crushed gravel and dry ' cement method is $30,000. When a -definite cost figure is determined, a request will be made to the Council for an appropriation, so they may be able to begin with the construction phase. During the interim, the necessary environmental assessment and shoreline management area permit will be procured by the Parks and Recreation Department. . • .Receive and file.
