Your Committee on Governmental Relations and Economic Development, to which was referred
Resolution No. 62-17, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 62-17, transmitted by Council Member Eileen O'Hara, via Communication
No. 89, dated January 20, 2017, urges the 2017 Hawai`i State Legislature to implement the
Rapid `Ohi`a Death Part I: Strategic Response Plan for Hawaii 2017-2019 and to provide
funding to implement the plan over the next three years.
Ms. O'Hara stressed the importance of the implementation of the strategic plan and the funding
of the research that will provide much needed guidance to the counties and the State in
preventing the spread of Rapid `Ohi`a Death and preserving what is left of the `Ohi`a forest
which is critical to the ecosystem.
Mr. Kanuha shared that he attended the first Rapid `Ohi`a Death summit in Honolulu and was
encouraged by the participation of the different stakeholders working towards solutions on how
to manage the spread of Rapid `Ohi`a Death.
Your Committee on Governmental Relations and Economic Development is in accord with the
purpose and intent of Resolution No. 62-17, and recommends its adoption.
