TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF RESOLUTION 45-17
Urging the Hawaii State Legislature to support funding for an advanced life support
ambulance, including necessary equipment and staffing for the district of Puna.
On behalf of the Hilo Medical Center, please accept our organizational testimony in
support of Hawaii County Resolution 45-17.
The East Hawaii Regional Board of Directors, the governing body of the Hilo Medical
Center, has made supporting and expanding healthcare services in the Puna District
one of our top strategic priorities. Last year, Hilo Medical Center's Emergency
Department cared for over 47,000 patients. Of that total, over half of the patients
came from the Puna district. The high utilization of our Emergency Department,
compounded by the transportation challenges in the Puna District, is of great concern
for our hospital. We understand how such numbers can place an enormous burden
on the three ambulances that currently serve the district.
We strongly believe that an additional ambulance in Puna, along with funding for
necessary equipment and personnel costs, will significantly improve access to
emergency health care, reduce response time, and most importantly, save lives. For
these reasons, we put our full support behind Resolution 45-17.
We are committed to supporting Senate Bill 820 and House Bill 837 as they advance
in the State Legislature. Thank you for your time in hearing our testimony. Aloha!
