To whom it may concern.
I would like to have the council openly discuss a proposal to have lifeguards and a tower at kua bay.As one knows,
ocean conditions change constantly in and around our islands. Most recently an unfortunate event occurred and claimed
the life of a tourist at kua bay.
As the council knows, there are not many beaches on the big island and the more frequently used ones like magic sands,
hapuna and spencer park are staffed with towers and lifeguards. Even though spencer only has staff on the weekends or
holidays.
So with more tourists coming to our island, usage is up at all known beach spots.The lifeguards perform a valuable
service for all those beach folks. Including the past few months, resuscitating two tourists that were found unresponsive
in the water on days with basically no surf warnings were posted.
Kua bay has a smaller area and larger usage over the past few years.Along with more dangerous rip currents and higher
surf.
So in interest of"Aloha" and public safety that the council consider one of three options. 1. Do nothing and let folks
continue to fend for themselves at kua bay. 2. Close all access to the beach area. 3. Approve resources in your budget to
staff it with lifeguards accordingly.
