Good morning Chairwoman Valerie T. Poindexter and members of the Hawaii county council.
I am writing this in support of resolution 49-17 and funding for a lifeguard at Kua Bay.
I often swim and surf down there in the early mornings. It's such a beautiful beach and it's close to the resorts where I
work.
I wanted to share with you my personal experiences about having to rescue swimmers who have gotten into trouble and
caught in the currents.
Over the past two winters I have had to rescue four different beachgoers. I snorkeler who ended up washing up on the
rocks and then getting sucked back out. on another occasion a 10-year-old boy got caught in the current and his brother
tried to rescue him both of them ended up getting stuck in the current on the south side of the beach where it's all
rocks. I ended up staying with a younger boy waited for the surf to subside and brought him back to safety on the
rocks.
finally just three weeks ago I was there just after Christmas. there was probably close to 200 people on the beach. A
huge series of waves came in and created this giant rip current and sucked out more than 15 to 20 people. several
bodyboarders and myself and ended up bringing in five children who could not make it back to shore.
Please support resolution 49-17 for the funding of a lifeguard at Kua Bay Beach Park.
