The following are the recommendations of the Planning, Research.
and Development Committee which were considered at its meeting. of
June 13, 1973:
COMMUNICATIONS
�No. 237: SIGN VARIANCE REQUEST - HAWAIIANA INVESTMENT CO. , INC.
From Charles H. Beckmann, Director of Creative Communi-
cations, Hawaiiana Investment Co. , Inc. , dated April 2,
1973, requesting a variance to install a sign at the
intersection of State Highway 11 and the Punaluu County
Road.
Led- 237.1: From Edward Harada, Chief Engineer, dated May 29,.
1973, informing that they concur with the recommenda-
tions from the Planning Department and that approval
for a variance be granted, subject to the following
conditions :
1. Sign be located on the owner's property.
2. Only one sign be permitted.
3. Size of sign be reduced to eight square feet
total area.
4. Approval be obtained from the State Highway
Department since this sign will front the
State Highway.
Accept the recommendation of the
Chief Engineer and approve the
variance request, subject to the
conditions, as listed.

Comm. 247: SIGN VARIANCE REQUEST - HILO MALL SHOPPING CENTER
From James A. Moore, DarRob Enterprises Pacific, Ltd.
dated April 3, 1973, requesting a sign variance to
install Hilo Mall Logos at the locations indicated on
their building plan.
4¢c.0- 247.1: From Mayor Shunichi Kimura dated May 30, 1973, informing
that the Department of Public Works concurs with the
Planning Department's comments and recommendation to
permit the two wall signs per street frontage on the
condition that no other shopping center sign be permitted
to be installed within this shopping center complex.
Accept the recommendation of the
administration and approve the
variance request subject to the
condition, as stated.
4L% Comm. 273.1: SAND MINING PROJECT OFFSHORE AT KEAUHOU-KONA
From Raymond H. Suefuji, Planning Director, dated
May 21, 1973, informing that they generally concur
with the Department of Research and Development's
comments but their only concern is that there may
be environmental impacts of which they are not aware
at the moment.
Therefore recommends that a position on this project
be withheld until an Environmental Impact Statement
has been prepared and reviewed by the appropriate
agencies and the public.
Accept recommendation of the
Planning Director.
Comm. 284: SIGN VARIANCE REQUEST - HILO SHOPPING CENTER
From John Oszajca dated May 2, 1973, informing that
last month they applied for and was granted two of
three permits for the main entry signs at Hilo
Shopping Center. Requests a variance for a third
sign so that they may locate two signs on Kekuanaoa
Street, one at the side entrance and one at the
rear entrance.
Auc-- 284.1: From Mayor Shunichi Kimura dated May 30, 1973,
informing that the Department of Public Works

concurs with the Planning Department's findings
and recommends that the variance to permit two
signs fronting Kekuanaoa Street be granted on the
condition that no other shopping center identifi-
cation sign is permitted to be installed within
this shopping center complex.
Accept the recommendation of the
administration and approve the
variance request subject to the
condition, as stated.
