The following are the recommendations of the Public Safety and
Transportation Committee which were considered at its meeting of
March 1, 1973:
COMMUNICATIONS:
No. 77.1: REQUEST - INSTALLATION OF STREET LIGHTS OR AMBER LIGHTS
AT THE INTERSECTION OF KAMEHAMEHA AND WAIANUENUE AVENUES
From Council Chairman Robert M. Yamada dated
February 26, 1973 submitting Mr. Henry Kawaihae's request
to consider once again the installation of either signal
lights or flashing red and amber lights at the intersection
of Kamehameha and Waianuenue Avenues.

A. L- No. 144: STATE LAND FOR EXPANSION OF WAIAKEA FIRE STATION
From Fire Chief Charles Takeguchi dated February 14, 1973,
requesting permission to apply to the State for the land
parcel containing approximately 25,000 sq.ft. to be trans-
ferred to the County by executive order to expand their
present Waiakea fire station to accommodate the increase
in workload. Informs that they have already discussed
this matter with Mr. Oswald Byrne, Hilo Airport Manager,
and he has no objections to this request.

4,„ -No. 152: TRAFFIC PROBLEMS IN VICINITY OF PROPOSED SECOND HIGH
SCHOOL
From Hilo High School Improvement & Development Council
dated February 7, 1973 , informing that they have gone
on record to unanimously endorse the early completion
of the second high school for Hilo but are aware of the
traffic problems that will be created in the area.
Therefore, asks for proper planning and making the
necessary improvements to roads and traffic patterns in
the vicinity of the three public schools and Hilo College
so that there will be a minimum of traffic congestion and
the maximum of safety to the students.

concurs with their concerns that
it is considered to be one of
the major problem areas and that
this matter has been referred to
the Traffic Engineer for his

RECOMMENDATIONS:
,L,,,c No. 1: INTERIM TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
Recommend that $1,000 be appropriated for an interim
transportation system from Pahoa to Hilo and request
the Corporation Counsel to prepare the proper document
to implement the program.

A ,a ,No. 2: RAISED PAVEMENT MARKERS
Request the Traffic Engineer to submit cost estimates
to install raised pavement markers on all County roadways
for consideration in the next fiscal year's budget.
