HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP PSTC 019 02/27/1974 1972-1976 • PUBLIC SAFETY AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE REPORT NO. 19 Hawaii County Council Hilo,Hawaii The following are the recommendations of the Public Safety and Transportation Committee which were ' considered at its meeting of February 27, 1974: $;)4 COMMUNICATIONS 4S) No . 66$.4: HAWAII COUNTY GASPLAN From John Fernandez, President, Hilo Downtown Improve- ment Association, dated February 1, 1974, expressing their concern on the congestion in the downtown area under the Hawaii County GASPLAN and informing that they oppose the closing- off of parking stalls before 4:30 p.m. Requests that a gas rationing plan be put into effect immediately: Receive and file; and assure writer -that the parking stalls' will not be closed off but will be blocked off only in emergency situations. An assurance of sufficient fuel to provide a full tank of gasoline for each of their car rental customers; 2 . The ability to fuel their vehicles without waiting in long lines; and 3 . The privilege of servicing and fueling their rental cars on Saturdays and Sundays: Refer to the Corporation Counsel for his comments and suggestions to resolve their problems. RECOMMENDATION No . 1: GASPLAN Thank KA MAKA 0 KOHALA for their recent article, "If You Cooperate You Can Stop Gas Lines" Gas Dealers -Say, copy attached, and commend the following service stations in Kohala for their suggestions in the article and their cooperation in the GASPLAN: 1. PLEASE DO THESE FEW THINGS TO MAKE The cooperation of everyone is needed, IT BETTER FOR YOURSELF AND EVERYONE. says the four Kohala service station owners. Here are some suggestions by them: 1. DO go back to the station you have been buying from for years. 2. DO only buy gas when you really _ NEED it - like you did before. • 3. DO buy only what gas you need. 4. DO cut down your driving a _ little bit. 5. DO NOT buy gas every time your license number comes up - you DO NOT HAVE TO buy just because it is "your day." 6. DO NOT make unnecessary trips - plan your buying trips - plan your visiting. ' A gas line will not be formed daily if everyone cooperates. Most of the gas lines have been caused by the same people getting in line every time it's • "their day" to "fill up," but really taking only 2-4 gallons, which seems to show there usually was no real need for gas. Remember, - however, we must follow the County of Hawaii gas plan on the even and odd numbers and dates when going to the service station to get your gas. All four Kohala station owners say they have plenty of gasoline for you any time you need it, if only you will DO YOUR PART by buying like you used to, following the six suggestions above. An earlier opening time (3:00 p.m. instead of 4:30 p.m.) for gas stations on Wednesday and Thursday began this week to allow you to. have more time on those days to come in for gas (NOT for forming lines).
