The following is the recommendation of the Joint Committee
comprised of the Public Works and Public Safety & Transportation
Committees which was considered at its meeting of February 15, 1973:
COMMUNICATION
Alco. No. 63: IMPROVEMENTS TO PALANI ROAD
From Councilman Kawahara dated December 29, 1972,
recommending the following improvements to Palani
Road:
1. Construct a pedestrian sidewalk from the
village to the new post office; \ ,
2. Widen the road, preferably on the south
side at least 5 or 6 feet, with a striped
pedestrian walking area;
3. Improve the bumpy condition of the road;
4. Grade and fill the shoulders on both sides
of the road;
5. Trim trees and bushes around the curves to
improve visibility;
6. Consider installation of an automatic traffic
control light system at Kuakini Highway and
Palani Road;
7.. Stripe a pedestrian crosswalk at the entrance
to Kealakehe School for the children crossing
Palani Road and paint warning "Slow! Children
Crossing ! " on the pavement on both sides
of the crosswalk about 100 feet away.
Feels that realignment of Palani Road can be
postponed indefinitely in view of the imminent
completion of the Kaahumanu Highway from Kawaihae
to Keahole Airport in July, 1973.
