Appointment Of Joseph K. Kamelamela As Corporation Counsel
Dear Chair Poindexter, Vice Chair Eoff, and Honorable Members of the County Council:
I am writing to you to support the nomination of Joseph K. Kamelamela as
Corporation Counsel for the County of Hawaii. I am an attorney in private practice with my
office located in Kealakekua,Hawaii. I have been practicing law on the Big Island since 1990.
During my many years of practice, I have participated in many civil actions, some
of which involved public interest litigation against the County of Hawaii, and instances in which
I represented county employees. I can respectfully report to you that during these years I have
had the opportunity to participate in litigation in which Mr. Kamelamela also participated.
I can humbly report to you that Mr. Kamelamela is a respected attorney in our
legal community. Mr. Kamelamela has been a fixture at the Office of the Corporation Counsel,
and has institutional knowledge of that office which is not easily replaced.
During the intervening years, Mr. Kamelamela has proven to be an attorney of
high legal intellect and honesty. Mr. Kamelamela has built positive relationships with the Courts
and the legal community over the years, and is regarded as a highly regarded representative of
the County of Hawaii. Mr. Karnelamela has earned a reputation as an attorney of high integrity.
He has proven that he prepares for hearings and trials, and offers reasonable and rational
arguments on behalf of his client.
Mr. Kamelamela and I have fought for oux respective client's interests when it
was required,however, Mr. Karnelamela was also pursuing simultaneously therewith just and
equitable solutions wherever possible.

I believe that Mr. Kamelamela will be a good administrator of the Office of the
Corporation Counsel. In cases in which my client's interests were aligned with that of the
County of Hawaii, Mr. Kamelamela provided thoughtful and reasonable legal arguments and
solutions to litigation issues. I could also count on Mr. Kamelamela to be professional and
prepared for all meetings.
I pray that you consider the value of Mr. Kamelamela in his years of service on
behalf of the County of Hawaii and approve his appointment as Corporation Counsel for the
County of Hawaii.
I will try to be present to provide this testimony in person, and answer any
questions you may have, if my court schedule permits on January 25, 2017.
