I strongly, support Comm: 53, funding of the Department of Parks and Recreation's 2016-
2017 Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Commission (PONC)
Stewardship Grant(s) for Kawa -Ka`ala`iki(Ka'u) TMK: 9-5-016:006 & 025; 9-5-017:005 &
007,to the Hawaii Wildlife Fund in its entirety, $13,200.00,to continue restoration of the
estuary and fishpond, "makai" (towards the sea) of identified parcels.
My husband and I have been homeowners of Ka`u for nearly forty-five (45) years and I have
ancestral times dating back to the seventeen hundreds (1700). We were among close family
(including Kupuna), friends, neighboring community residents, "malahini" (visitors to our
island) and "opio" (young) school children from around "Moku o Keawe" (Hawai`i Island) and
the continental United States who assisted Hawaii Wildlife Fund at Kawa Springs—Ka`ala`iki
Streams since October of 2014.
Each month, we congenially labored to remove invasive grass species, " 'aka `akai" (bulrushes)
identified by Anakala(uncle) Herbert Kin In, (July 8' 1961 —Bishop Museum Report, 7-10.5)
that aggressively encroached this ancient pond. All work was done with hand tools carefully
removing the rhizomes as accomplished as seen in the pictures on page 2.
