• The Hawaii Police Department services an area tote 1ñj 1 1
square miles. (Ot er counties combined: 2,286 square miles)
• Staffing for the police department consists of:
450 Authorize Full-time Sworn Positions (Currently 14
vacancies)
144 Authorized Full-time Civilian Positions (Currently 14
vacancies)
40 Authorized part-time School Crossing Guard Positions
(Currently 15 vacancies)
• We are currently actively recruiting to fill all of our vacant
positions. Projected to begin 86th Police Recruit Class on May
16th, to bring our sworn staffing to full strength.
Police to Population Ratio
• According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the national average ratio,
among all agency sizes, of full time officers per 1 ,000 residents is 2. 1 .
• The Hawaii Police Department has 450 authorized sworn positions, and
serves an estimated population of 196,428 (US Census Bureau, 2015).
• HPDRatio - 2.29
• Note that not taken into account is the number of visitors to Hawaii
Island. The 2016 DBEDT preliminary visitor count is 1 ,550,046 with
an estimated daily census of 32,000 visitors.
• According to the County of Hawaii, Current Data Book, the population of
the County of Hawaii is projected to be 220,878 in 2020 (Increase of
24,450).
• HPD Ratio — 2.03
• Based on this projection in 2020, the Hawaii Police Department will
be short by 13.8 officers to meet the national average
