Subject: Budget for Hawaii Police Department Regarding Animal Control Contract
Aloha,
I am sending this email in hopes of changing the way our Humane Society operates and how funds are used.
About 14,000 animals are killed each year and the situation is not improving. Funds would be better spent to
proactively and humanely control animal population growth rather than killing so many. The annual amount
this island's Humane Society gets, is about$2 million so over the past 10 years it is about$20 million without
any progress on animal population control. Over 100,000 animals have been killed over the past 10
years. Killing is not the answer. Additional funds for Spay and Neuter should not be wasted by giving to HIHS
coupon program which is ineffective. Those funds are better used by animal welfare non-profits which
are conducting monthly, low-cost or no-cost, spay and neuter clinics all over the island.
I hope we will get a new Humane Society contractor that is willing to work with and network with existing
rescue agencies - If we all work together we can make a difference and save many lives. Reaching out to
community organizations, groups and schools to educate on spay/neuter and promote as many Spay/Neuter
clinics as possible. We need to make a better community- How we treat our animals is a reflection of who we
are.
