Subject: More police officers needed
Aloha,
My name is Linda Fuller and I am the President of the Hawaiian Orchid Island Estates Community Association and the
Neighborhood Watch Coordinator.
Our community is under attack by bands of thieves and we are afraid to leave our properties unattended.The thieves
know that our area-Puna district is completely under served with police presence.The subdivisions in Volcano are
extremely vulnerable due to the long response time.The thieves know this and we are at their mercy.
What we would like to see happen is an increase the number of police officers for our area and ultimately a manned
police substation in the Volcano area.
If this budget passes with a cut in police overtime what happens to us if one of our 4 police officers on duty at any one
time is sick or on vacation? If overtime is cut will another officer be allowed to cover shifts?And if not that would leave
us even more vulnerable.
Why is a district the size of Oahu so understaffed? Puna is the fastest growing district in the state and only 8 officer are
assigned to it. How are we citizens supposed to feel safe?The only ones who are safe are the thieves and drug dealers
because catching them in the act is almost impossible.
Neighborhood Watch volunteers can only do so much and we are working very hard to get license plate numbers of
suspicious vehicles reported to the police but we can't do it alone.We need to know that if we have a burglary in
progress we won't have to wait 30 minutes for the officers to get to Volcano.
If we had a manned station up here the response time would be minimal.
None of us feel safe in our own homes any longer.
