I would like to submit the following comments regarding the proposed property tax increases:
- I strongly oppose any increase to the General Excise Tax, since it is the tax effecting everything not only purchased, but
also for all services. As Mayor Kim stated it is"the most regressive tax, affecting those most who have the least income
and finances to afford it". In addition, efforts should continue to increase all the Outer islands' share of the TAT.
- Do not Increase the home owners whose primary residence is Hawaii Island property tax rate. Increasing this property
tax rate would have a major impact on ALL residents, especially low income families.
-Suggest increasing the property taxes for hotels and resorts, commercial and industrial to the high-end of the range. As
we know, the major industry in Hawaii is tourism.Since hotel/resort rates are already high, most tourist would probably
not even see or be concerned if hotel/resort rates needed to be increased to compensate for hotels/resorts having to
pay more property taxes.
- Increase the property tax rate for those who have second homes on Hawaii's Island and who are not residents of the
Island
- Increase the tax rate on vacation property rentals
- If needed, increase the tax rate on those property owners only paying the minimum property tax rate
-As a last recourse, and only if enough revenue cannot be generated by the proposed property tax increases, suggest
the proposed incremental increase in the gasoline tax
Mahalo for allowing me to share my comments and observations !
