Box 412 Na'alehu,HI 96772 Aloha mai kakou, This written testimony is in wholehearted support of Resolution 214-17, introduced by Councilwoman Maile Medeiros David (District 6),which awards a Public Access,Open Space,and Natural Resources Preservation Maintenance Stewardship Grant to Na Mamo 0 Kawa. As a Native Hawaiian non-profit organization comprised of life-long Ka'u residents, our group is fortunate to include traditional cultural practitioners, students, academics, ecologists, educators,fishermen,cadets, surfers,kamali`i, sportsmen, archaeologists, natural resource managers, and others. Our members possess an unbreakable connection to the land and sea at Kawa. These relationships have endured for generations. Current efforts to care for this area are a direct continuation of those relationships; grounded in our ancestors' most fundamental practice and worldview: Aloha `Aina. Na Mamo 0 Kawa members initiated The Kawa Stewardship Project in Fall 2012 as an ongoing collaborative volunteer effort which has led to the successful stewardship of public access points,freshwater springs,cultural sites,Heiau '0 Ke'eku,recreational sites,native flora, and waste facilities. Irrespective of past disagreements among various stakeholders, Na Mamo 0 Kawa has communicated with all parties in a positive and synergistic manner. This has allowed our collective focus to be placed on curatorship rather than conflict. As demonstrated in our organizational timeline, engaging both public and private entities has thankfully resulted in the development of our substantial and ever-growing support network. As one of the few areas in Kali where such a wide array of rich natural and cultural resources are reasonably accessible to the public,the project area is of vital importance. That importance highlights the need for thoughtful and capable community-based stewardship. The potential for this project to provide both tangible and intangible benefits to the community in the form of sustenance, spiritual growth, cultural immersion, and recreation will inevitably contribute to the future self- sufficiency of this project in the years to come. Our members possess a deep cultural, physical, and spiritual connection to Kawa. This intimate relationship is the primary driving force behind our members' innate sense of duty to steward the natural and cultural elements existing in this sacred space for the good of past,present, and future generations. We believe the more effort we give in rehabilitating and stewarding this wahi pana, the more it will hanai our families, friends, and all of Hawaii in return. Should the Council adopt Resolution 214-17, our members and the people of Kali would know that it embraces our shared kuleana to malama Kawa. Pre- 2012 NMOK members and their families have been visiting Kawa for decades in their respective individual capacities.
