Comm. 352 : ' 23RD HAWAIIAN INTERNATIONAL 'BTLL'FI'S'HTOURNAMENT
From J. W. Sutherland, Executive Director,
Hawaiian International Billfish Association, dated
June 12 , 1981, requesting County participation in
defraying some of the cost involved in bringing
media representatives from Australia, New Zealand,
Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, England, Mainland USA
and the State of Hawaii to attend the Hawaiian
International Billfish Tournament in Kona, July 24
to August 2 , 1981. Informs members of the media
are provided with many opportunities to explore
Hawaii_ and to write about such attractions as
hunting, camping, sightseeing and attendance at
any cultural or sporting events which may be taking
place at the time of the
tournament. Information
gathered in this manner becomes the basis for
articles written year-round on the entire State of
Hawaii, not just the fishing tournament.
Submits a copy of a detailed estimate of expected
housing costs and informs 'the total will be very
close to the amount it is expected that the Hotel
King Kamehameha will charge;
recommends Council refer to Department of Research and Development to
work out a counter arrangement with the hotels on housing accommodations
for the media representatives covering the tournament.
It was the consensus of the Committee that by providing funds of this
type, the. County would be setting a precedent for similar requests in
the future.

AMENDMENT - Council meeting of July 22, 1980: EDC REPORT NO
(AMENDED)
The County Council amended EDC Report 8 by deleting ADOPTED: fUn 22 1981
the recommendation of the Committee and inserting in lieu
thereof: "Amend the Committee Report to allow the
Department of Research & Development to expend funds in
support of the County's travel writers program including hosting writers at
Big Island events so that they will cover Big Island Travel stories, "
