Dear Chairwoman Poindexter and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to nominate Mr. Alex Akau of Council District 9 to the Cultural
Resource Commission. Mr. Akau retired from Willocks Construction after 20 years of
employment.
Alex Akau was born and raised on Hawai'i Island. He is a graduate of Honokaa High
School and an active member of the Waimea community where he currently lives. Mr.
Akau is a co-founder of the Aloha Festivals Paniolo Parade and the Poke Contest.
In 2013, Mr. Akau was honored by Parker Ranch at its 51st Annual July 4th Rodeo and
Horse Races. As an honoree, Mr. Akau was described as someone who "lives by
kokua and is always kind and generous to everyone around him, but enjoys working
under the radar while wearing a cloak of humility so others can prosper". As a Kupuna
with deep rooted Hawaiian values, Mr. Akau lives his life by caring for others, caring for
the land/aina, and preserving his Hawaiian culture.
If confirmed, he will serve a term ending December 21, 2021.
