Eileen O'Hara, Representative
Hawaii County Council District 4
Dear Ms. O'Hara:
I was disappointed to read the headline article appearing in the February 17 Hawaii Tribune-Herald that
indicated you have taken up the "Styrofoam Ban"proposed by a former Council Member, and opposed by your
predecessor. You do realize that the net result of such action would be an increase in cost to the people you
represent. All costs of doing business are ultimately passed down to the consumer. What troubles me most is
this proposed action is based purely on emotion and ideology, and devoid of any factual basis.
You are quoted in thesubject article as stating, "It's a persistent material in our environment that causes illness
and mortality of birds and marine life. " In what credible scientific document did you find any basis for making
such a statement? I am unaware of any rigorous study that would support such a claim. If you could direct me to
one, I might be convinced of the veracity of your claim.
In promoting your personal "environmental" agenda, I believe you do a disservice to the people of Council
District 4 that you represent. I hope you will reconsider your anti-Polystyrene crusade.
Sincerely,
Richard Hoeflinger
