Subject: Sustainable Kohala urges you to support Bill 13
On behalf of the Steering Committee for Sustainable Kohala, I urge the Council to support Bill 13 which
bans polystyrene food containers.
Styrofoam is a toxic material that does not decompose and therefore threatens our fragile ecosystem
for tens of thousands of years..
Banning its use is not a radical or unduly expensive action. Many cities and counties have banned or
partially banned its use, including New York City (and several other cities in New York), Takoma Park,
MD, Seattle, Washington DC, Miami Beach, FL, Freeport ME, Portland ME, Nantucket (City and County)
MA, Minneapolis, Portland OR, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, among many others.
The few pennies more per serving that compostable food containers would cost customers is trivial
compared to our island's imminent landfill problem, along with the risk to birds and fish of polystyrene
ingestion.
Please do the right thing and vote for Bill 13. COUNTY CLERK
