Aloha Chair O'Hara and members of the Environmental Management Committee,
's been resurrected
Our group has testified consistently on its strong support for Bill 13(formerly 140). We are grateful that it's
without being weakened.We believe that it's sound,ground-level legislation which takes environmental,economic, and
convenience concerns into account. It is well-conceived, positive, proactive legislation meant to heal and protect our county's
lands and waters from a completely avoidable source of long-term pollution.
Any claims that food containers cannot be replaced with more ecologically sound and workable ones are disingenuous. I've sat
through hours of testimony by individuals and business owners who use and/or know about far less toxic ways to serve and
store food.
An example of how far-reaching and stealth the problem of styrofoam container has to do with my own mother. She's
temporarily staying at the seniors' residence in Kona (Regency at Hualalai). She had dinner delivered to her room last night
that she ate minutes later. It came in 3 styrofoam containers—all headed to our island's landfill! The amount of styrofoam
containers being used in that one facility is staggering. It's clear that the institutional use of styrofoam--a huge and
completely unnecessary use— is vast,completely wasteful,and toxic to our island and our seas.
We hope that new members of this council will take the time to review previous testimony provided by the many
knowledgable people who came from around the nation and our island to speak to the need to ban polystyrene use. Our
members also hope that each of you will use your integrity to help our county lead the way in setting futuristic,sustainable
standards, like the plastic bag ban,which are helping protect our island and the future of all people who live here.
