Aloha Hawaii County Council,
I am writing to you today to express my support for passing Bill 13 to greatly limit the use of Styrofoam containers in
Hawaii County. As a concerned resident and local businessman on the island, I believe that banning Styrofoam is in the
best interest of our county because the use of Styrofoam is very problematic.
First, Styrofoam is derived from dirty fossil fuels that are increasingly linked to global climate change. Second, Styrofoam
does not easily degrade, often lasting decades or more in our landfills and beautiful beaches. Other municipalities have
already passed similar legislation banning the use of disposable Styrofoam with success, such as San Francisco, Portland,
and Los Angeles.
As mentioned by your fellow council members, many businesses already use biodegradable containers quiet
successfully, such as mine Café Ono here in Volcano village. I feel the Big Island is ready to join the other cities in
educating the public about how important this regulation is to our island. It is up to all Hawaiian citizens to ensure the
success of future generations through wise, and thoughtful legislation that protects our precious environment and
limited resources. For these reasons I am expressing my support for Bill 13 to greatly limit the usage of disposable
Styrofoam.Thank you for your time in reading my letter.
Regards,
Ira Ono
