Polystyrene foam is toxic to our environment,threatening native wildlife and human health. The small financial benefits to be gained by a few in maintaining this bad practice are far outnumbered by the environmental and health benefits to be gained by many when you choose to approve this bill. According to census and Hawaii Tourism Authority data for Hawaii Island,there are over 180,000 residents and over 1,400,000 annual visitors. That's nearly 1.6 million people who could benefit from this decision, and tons of litter that we can keep out of our island's landfills and beaches. Passing this bill is an important move that fits into the County of Hawaii's Zero Waste Implementation Plan (2009). For the above reasons and more, I support Bill 13 in order to protect the health and welfare of Hawaii's residents, waterways, and beaches. Please join me in "holding the foam" and approve Bill 13.
