I am a member of the musical group that plays most Tuesdays at what was the farmers' market in front of the baseball field in Wailea. The market was a place for local farmers and crafts makers to sell their produce. We were also offered food prepared on the premises by permitted food preparers. Customers included local II residents from near and as far away as Hilo, along with tourists and guests of local residents. I would stand in front of my microphone watching everyone talking, laughing, and eating; children playing; and people seemingly enjoying our music. It was Valerie Poindexter who arranged to have portable toilets set up at the location, and I have seen her numerous times at the market. I am sure that there are others who would benefit from farmers'markets at the parks designated in Bill 47, as the Hakalau Farmers' market did for us until someone filed a complaint. The amendment proposed in Bill 47 wouild open the door to others to benefit from the bounty that we enjoy on the Big Island. By opening more parks to farmers' market activity, the County will be going a long way toward ensuring that more people enjoy the fresh and healthy foods produced by our hard-working farmers.
