Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation,to which was referred
Communication No. 317, reports as follows:
Communication No. 317, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated May 31, 2017, nominates
Michael Doolittle of District 1 to the Veterans Advisory Committee.
Mr. Doolittle is a retired independent real estate developer, investor, and businessman. He currently
owns Mystic Palm Plantation, a veteran's vocational training center in Hakalau. He is a current
member of the Hawai`i Island Veterans Memorial, Inc. If confirmed, he would serve a term ending
December 31, 2021.
Ms. Barbara Kossow, Deputy Managing Director to Mayor Kim, introduced Nominee Doolittle,
who was present in the Hilo Council Chambers and communicating via videoconferencing.
Mr. Doolittle offered a summary of his expertise and responded to questions from Council Members.
Several Council Members commented in favor of Mr. Doolittle. The vote was then taken with nine
Council Members voting "aye."
Pursuant to Chapter 15, Article 7, Section 15-61 of the Hawai`i County Code,the Mayor shall appoint,
with the approval of Council, a representative from various veteran associations to serve on the
Veterans Advisory Committee.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Communication No. 317, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Michael Doolittle to the
Veterans Advisory Committee.
