Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation,to which was referred
Communication No. 321, reports as follows:
Communication No. 321, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated May 31, 2017, nominates
George Sheridan of District 5 to the Veterans Advisory Committee.
Mr. Sheridan served in the United States Army from 1967-1976 and the Hawai`i Army National Guard
from 1976-1999. He is a Vietnam veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars#3830. He is
a current member of the Hawai`i Island Veterans Memorial, Inc. If confirmed,he would serve a term
ending December 31, 2020.
Ms. Barbara Kossow, Deputy Managing Director to Mayor Kim, stated that Mr. Sheridan was traveling
and could not be present. She said that he would be at the July 7th Council meeting for an interview and
questioning. Committee Members agreed that was an acceptable arrangement. The vote was then taken
with nine Council Members voting "aye." Mr. Sheridan's nomination was forwarded to the Council
with a positive recommendation.
Pursuant to Chapter 15, Article 7, Section 15-61 of the Hawai`i County Code,the Mayor shall appoint,
with the approval of Council, a representative from various veteran associations to serve on the Veterans
Advisory Committee.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Communication No. 321, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of George Sheridan to the
Veterans Advisory Committee.
