Your Committee on Public Works, to which was referred Communi-
cation 1605, reports as follows :
Communication 1605 is a sign variance request from Hirose Nurseries ,
Inc. , for the erection of a twelve (12) square. foot identification
• and directional sign along its Kanoelehua Avenue property frontage
which will enhance identification of their establishment .
Your committee has reviewed the comments of our Planning and Public
Works Departments and recognizes the existing non-conforming use in a
residential zoned district.
In reviewing our sign regulations and considerating the permitted
non-conforming use by the applicant, a twelve (12) square foot
identification sign would be within the thirty-two ( 32) square foot
area limitation allowable in business districts . A directional sign
of twelve (12) square feet, however, far exceeds our regulations .
Accordingly, the size of the directional sign must be reduced.
The Department of Public Works recommends that the applicant
construct two separate signs , an identification sign and a
directional sign which does not exceed two ( 2) square feet in area.
Your Committee on Public Works concurs with this recommendation and
submits this stipulated variance reques to the Council for
approval. Mrs. Morishita, General Manage .€f Hirose Nurseries, has
been contacted and finds these conditions agreeable.
